Light and dark are universal partners and each one balances and supports the other. This also applies to people.
Humans were never designed to be one-dimensional beings. It is our personal growth that shape our personalities, thoughts, emotions, and belief systems, therefore both light and shade play important roles in our existence and growth.
Light and shade can refer to the way we feel (light versus heavy), the way we think (clarity versus mental blockages), the way we action (intentional, mindful action versus reactionary or stagnant action), the way we currently perceive life through our perspective (hope versus despair), and spiritual connection (soul growth and expansion).
Most of us traverse the ‘personal light spectrum’ on a daily level, experiencing up and down moments, yet able to find where we feel most comfortable and stabilise ourselves there. It is when we extend beyond ‘our normal’ and find ourselves in the extreme end of our personal light or shade range that we activate our periods of growth. If we sit too long in one extreme or another, we may deny or even lose the other part of ourselves. We need both to bring into a sense of balance and perspective by always reassessing as we traverse life.
Light is a form of energy that includes frequency and vibration. The light energy within you shifts as you move through your own light and shade moments. Your personal frequency and vibration alter as a result, drawing people and experiences to you that align and support your current state of awareness and growth, whether you deem them positive or negative. This is an important way of gauging where you are currently at and where you desire to be. For example, if you feel unsupported, alone, or unloved, this can indicate your current ‘light vibration’ and desired ‘light vibration’ are out of sync. Immersing yourself in the vibration of love and connection through intentional visualisation, meditation, and the willingness to connect with others (and receive) will shift your personal light vibration towards your desired outcome.
In a nutshell, you have the power within to alter your personal vibration and guide your journey through your spectrum of light and dark. This can be achieved through intentional thoughts and actions (course-correcting as you go), adjusting what information you take in, the people and environments you spend time in and even utilising music to shift your vibration, to name a few.

Understanding the role of your shadow self
For many, the shadow self is a place that they wish to avoid as it can bring up heavy emotions and memories. Yet this is the spring clean for our mental, emotional, and spiritual bodies and offers us the opportunity to revisit, reassess and reclaim what brings us happiness, wisdom, and wellbeing for the next stage of our journey.
Your shadow self is your life companion, sharing in your life experiences and offering a perspective that your light self may not be able to. Understanding and embracing both aspects of yourself, enable you to feel inner peace.
Once you understand the role your shadow self plays in your life, you are able to make that process work for you rather than against you.
Some people naturally gravitate towards the darker end of their light spectrum and feel comfortable and safe. Others prefer the lighter end of their spectrum, and when they find themselves sliding or residing towards the shadow end of their personal light spectrum, longer than they are comfortable with, they respond with a survival instinct of fight (defensive), flight (running away or always moving) or freeze (procrastination or fearful to act), in an attempt to shift away from the shadow side of themselves.
If everyone experiences the dark or shadow end of the personal light spectrum differently, what role does our shadow self, play in our life?
For some it offers comfort, solace, protection, and shelter from the world. For others it represents hidden power, strength, and mystery (making it deliberately difficult for others to read or even connect with them). The duration in which people sit within this vibration can vary due to their personal circumstances and choices.
The shadow self can represent all of these things for our mental, emotional, and physical self to experience and grow. So how does our spiritual self, respond?
Sometimes we experience a situation(s) in life that plunge us into deep shock, trauma, or life changing choices. When this process overwhelms our mental, emotional and /or physical bodies rapidly, our soul (spiritual) essence is frequently impacted. These events are often referred to as the dark night of the soul, causing our vibration to drop quickly, and the manageable shadow self becomes more powerful, creating an energetic vacuum effect.
Suddenly, you are self-directed to internalise and question everything. This often involves a deep re-evaluation of belief systems, previous choices and actions, a peeling back of the past and confronting of your inner demons, in order to overcome and move forward. Essentially, it means breaking down to break through. Yes, you do break through.
When you reemerge from the darkness (or shadow side), into the light, you feel renewed and refreshed, even relieved! You have plunged deeper and emerged lighter, revealing a deeper sense of self, resilience, a new level of spiritual expansion, and opening yourself up to a higher level of vibration. As a result, your thoughts, feelings, actions and even belief systems flow from a place of deeper compassion and unconditional love. Intuition and other spiritual abilities are also often heightened through this experience.
In summary, the spiritual journey involving the ‘dark night of the soul’ opens the door to higher consciousness wisdom, compassion and understanding.
Therefore, our shadow side provides the gateway for us to move towards something more. It offers the keys to expansion and deeper understanding of ourselves and others.
How many gateways have you experienced so far? Have you experienced the dark night of the soul journey? What was revealed to you?
Remember…
The brighter the Light, the darker the shadow.
Where Light illuminates and heightens, shadow provides depth.
