This is a subject that often arises within my work and personal life. Many people struggle with finding a sense of balance in their life due to a feeling of lack, be it mentally, emotionally, physically, or even spiritually.
Their lives are impacted and thrown out of balance by a common denominator – the difficulty to receive. When this core issue is explored and overcome, it is as if the binding is released, and they are able to rebalance their lives in a way that makes them feel happier and more energised.
Our life journey is unique when compared to others, therefore we each have arrived at this topic due to our backgrounds or experiences being variable.
Let’s take a look at some common reasons why people struggle to receive and how to work on them.
What makes you feel resistant to receiving?
- Being a natural-born healer- prioritising the needs of others above your own
- Conditioning from family background – family dynamics, number of children, how much attention available from parents
- Personal belief systems – spiritual or religious based, personality traits
- Expectations from yourself or others
- Inner drive (soul influence) – feeling as though it is your mission to protect or serve others.
- Self-worth issues
- Past life vows – bringing in spiritual vows from other lifetimes to be of service to humanity.
- The desire to constantly prove yourself.
How can you tell you struggle to receive? The following actions may make you feel uncomfortable or anxious.
- Being offered:
- Compliments
- Gifts
- Accolades
- Money
- Love
- Touch
- Patterns or Cycles of giving more than you receive are a regular occurrence and begin to create feelings of resentment or lack of self-confidence.
This results in:
- Financial issues
- Feeling alone
- Feeling resentful
- Desiring love
- Addiction (requiring a quick feel-good fix)
- Always elevating other people’s achievements above your own
- Lack of joy in your life due to energy depletion
If you are resistant to receiving long term how can this impact your life?
- Establishing or maintaining a healthy relationship.
- Friendships – you are the main contributor to the friendship and therefore you can feel out of balance.
- Manifestation and goal setting feel uncomfortable or never seem to work out for you.
- Limiting your flow of financial abundance
- Personal energy levels drop resulting in feeling anxious or even depressed.
Steps towards becoming open to receiving:
- Find your baseline of receiving (do you feel comfortable with compliments but not with receiving gifts?), and practice small steps to create new habits to becoming more accepting or open.
- Mindful actions rather than automated or reactional ones.
- Visualisation techniques to facilitate receiving in whatever form needs strengthening.
- Spend time with new people that are not familiar with your default settings.
- Develop healthy personal boundaries in all aspects of your life (relationships, financial, etc.)
- Connect openly with others.
- Understand that giving and receiving are vital for universal energy flow, it is the breath of life, one cannot exist without the other.
When you are out of balance, you may experience the following:
- Talking more than listening
- Spending money more than saving money.
- Working instead of resting
- Maintaining responsibility and neglecting fun
- Loving but struggling to be loved
- Supporting but feeling unsupported
- Teaching others and not learning from them
- …and the list goes on.
By finding your balance, all of these things can be evened out, making it a lot easier to go day to day without feeling exhausted and burnt out. By empowering yourself rather than passing that power onto others, you restore balance and control of your own life and feel happier as a result.
As everyone’s spiritual awakening journeys are unique to them and their lives, you may experience further growth phases that you desire more understanding on.
